New Features |
The 90D looks extremely similar to the previous model (80D) but look inside and there have been some significant upgrades. The 90D features an all new 32.5MP "DualPixel CMOS AF" sensor - the sensor not only captures the image, it also acts as part of the autofocus system. This significantly improves autofocus capability when using the camera in Live View mode (using the LCD screen as the viewfinder). It is still not as fast as normal viewfinder operation, but the gap is closing.
The most significant update for dental use is the two Custom Modes (C1 and C2). This allows us to pre-program the 90D so that C1 is set for portrait views and C2 is set for all of the closeup views. Simply choose the custom mode for the view(s) you are taking, focus and shoot. The Custom Modes are also nice in case someone changes settings on the camera. To get back to the proper settings, you simply turn the dial to another mode and then back to the User Mode - all of the pre-programmed settings are then restored. Additional changes include: - the lastest Canon Digic 8 processor (faster than the Digic 6 in the 80D) - better power management - the 90D uses the same battery as the 80D but the number of shots per charge is 1300 (vs. 960 in the 80D) - 4K video is now standard in the 90D vs. 1080p HD in the 80D - All new 32.5 MP sensor (80D was a 24 MP camera) - up to 11 frame-per-second continuous shooting for recreational shooting (7 fps in Live View mode) Built-in Wi-Fi is a very nice addition to the 90D but it doesn't work the way that most dental offices would like. You can use your smartphone, tablet or computer to view images on the camera's memory card and you can also control the camera using one of these devices as a live view remote. You can also transfer images once they have been captured on the memory card, but the camera will not automatically transfer the images to a device as you take them. |
Macro Flash Options |
The Godox MF-R76C TTL macro flash is the first of three flash options for TTL flash control on the EOS 90D. The MF-R76 TTL macro flash is unique in that it is powered by a lithium-ion rechargeable battery. The battery can be recharged in the flash by an included USB-C cable or in the included USB charger. A fully charged battery yields approximately 500 flashes.
The Canon MR-14EX II macro flash is the second flash option. The MR-14EX II's flash head is shaped like a ring flash, but it is actually "split" into two arced tubes. This gives you the even illumination of a ring, but still allows you to vary the power from side to side. This affords you more creative control over the lighting. (shown above - image #1) The last option is the Godox MF12 Wireless Macro System with the R2-U Bracket. The Godox wireless flashes feature built-in lithium-ion rechargeable batteries and the included Godox XPro transmitter uses radio communication with the flashes instead of optical communication. |
Macro Lens Options |
There are two lens options for the 90D: the Tokina 100mm macro lens (18oz.) and the Canon EF 100mm L macro lens (22oz.). Both lenses offer similar optical quality while the Canon EF 100mm L macro lens add Image Stabilization (IS). The IS system makes focusing easier - a sophisticated system measures movement and counteracts the movement by shifting lens elements. If you are taking a mirror shot and you have the mirror in one hand and the camera in the other, you will be amazed how much more stable
the image is in the viewfinder. |
